THINKING OF REMODELING?

Your home represents a large investment, and it's proper care and maintenance is essential. Also important is the fact that your home must suit your present needs as well as your lifestyle. This may require change. If you need a new bathroom or an additional bedroom, there's no reason to uproot your family and move - YOU CAN REMODEL!

By carefully planning home improvements, you can update your home, increase the value of your investment, and customize your living space - all for a lot less than the cost of a new home. Proper planning is vital.

Finding a qualified, professional remodeling contractor need not be a difficult or unpleasant task. By following a few basic guidelines, you will not only make the selection process easier, but you will also be more prepared to make the best selection for your needs.

  • Employ a contractor with an established business in your local area

  • Is the contracting company insured? (Qualified contractors are insured.)

  • Ask for at least three references and call them. Go out and look at finished products

  • Talk to friends, neighbors, hardware store owners, and lumberyard people.

  • Check with the Better Business Bureau.

  • Get everything in writing, including what the contractor will and won't do - such as daily cleanup or upon completion of the job.

  • Always insist that all proper building codes are adhered to and all building permits are posted.

Your contractor should also have earned Certification from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI®). This certification means he has satisfied all of the requirements of the NARI®. These include a minimum of 10 years service to the home improvement industry, and documentation and demonstration of extraordinary competence in the basic areas of remodeling. He must also document annually his adherence to the association's strict code of ethics. Less than 400 persons nationwide have been named, "NARI® CERTIFIED REMODELERS."

Follow these suggestions - do the necessary home work. Only in this way will you be able to make that very important decision with peace of mind.
